JUVENILE COURT DIVISION
The Juvenile Court Division (JCD) adjudicates felony, misdemeanor, and status offense cases involving youthful offenders under the age of 17, as well as traffic offenses committed by juveniles under the age of 17. Although JCD has original jurisdiction over most juvenile cases, the Superior Court has exclusive jurisdiction over children between the ages of 13 and 16 who are charged with other more serious felonies, such as murder. In addition to delinquency matters, the JCD handles Children in Need of Services (CHINS) cases for situations where behaviors or conditions occur within a family or school environment that indicate the need for services and corrective action to protect the child and the integrity of the child’s family. With the dual goals of ensuring the community is protected and wellbeing of juveniles is secured, the JCD works collaboratively with the staff of Juvenile Court, probation, Department of Juvenile Justice , the local school system and other agencies.
